Antique Clocks

The standard grandmother clocks tend to have been made in the 1920’s and 30’s and vary between 5’4” and 5’9” in height but there seems to be no hard and fast rule about how tall it has to be. Some grandfather clocks may fall into this height category, but they are some distinguishing characteristics for the grandmother: if the clock is weight driven, has a dome top or swan necks, is more substantial in stature , has the defined vertical shape, and has a 10” dial (even if it is less than 6’3” tall).  The Grandmother clock tends to be more slender looking than the Grandfather clock as you can see in the 1928 Waltham Advertisement below.

The term is used loosely in some cases, as some people use the phrase to depict a lttle mantle clock, but this is part of the "true" definition.
